Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Whether from heredity, obesity or ingesting certain drugs, men can develop enlarged breasts. This can happen at any age. Enlarged male breasts is also referred to as gynecomastia.
The condition often includes excess localized fat, excess breast skin, excess glandular tissue development and can impact one or both breasts.
Enlarged male breasts often cause emotional distress and can damage your self-confidence. Some men choose to avoid many physical activities in order to hide their appearance and condition.
Are you a candidate for gynecomastia surgery?
As with most elective cosmetic procedures, there are several basic criteria that determine if you’re a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery. They include:
- You are bothered by the condition and size of your breasts
- Your condition can’t be treated through other medial options
- You enjoy relatively good health without any medical conditions that could jeopardize your healing or present surgical risks
• You’re a non-smoker (smoking can impair the healing process), and you have realistic expectations on what the surgery can do for you
Cost for gynecomastia surgery
Costs can vary based on individual patient needs and the amount of surgery required.
The costs involved in this procedure include facility/hospital fees, medical tests, anesthesia fees, Dr. Jimerson’s fee and any medication or post-operative garments that may be required. Our staff will provide you with a detailed cost estimate for your procedure
The Recovery Process
Following your surgery, there will be some discomfort and swelling. The pain can be controlled with the medication prescribed by Dr. Jimerson. After the liposuction you will be covered with compression bandages or a support garment to help control the swelling, as well as compress the skin to the new body contours.
Dr. Jimerson may place a small drain in the incisions to help remove any excess fluid or blood. Swelling may take several months to completely dissipate.
Avoid any excess force or motion following your surgery and during your recovery process. Gynecomastia surgery is permanent as long as you maintain a stable weight.
You will discuss various anesthesia options with Dr. Jimerson, including sedation and general anesthesia. He will determine the best type of anesthesia based on the procedure, your health history and his preferences.
There are several surgical options, and Dr. Jimerson will choose the one that is best for your particular condition. The liposuction technique is used to remove excess fatty tissue using a cannula. This may be used alone, or in combination with other techniques.
The excision technique uses an incision to remove excess skin and glandular tissue, as well as when it is necessary to reduce or reposition the nipple or areola. Different incision approaches are based on the specific enlarged breast condition.
Depending on the extent of gynecomastia, a combination of liposuction and excision techniques may be used.
Risks involved in gynecomastia surgery
As with any surgical procedure, there are some potential risks or complications. You have to determine if the benefits that you’ll obtain from your procedure outweigh the risks involved.
Dr. Jimerson and his trained staff will do everything possible to minimize risks and post-operative complications. Risks may include:
- Poor wound healing

Gynecomastia surgery preparation
What happens prior to gynecomastia surgery? You will have lab tests, and the doctor may have you take new medications or adjust the medications that you’re currently taking.
If you smoke, you must stop several weeks prior the surgery, as it can severely impeded the healing process.
Finally, you should arrange to have someone available to drive you home after your surgery, and to be with you for the first night.
Gynecomastia surgery results are long lasting. Results will be seen immediately following the procedure, but swelling will distort the actual results. It will take several months for the swelling to subside in order to see the final results.
The post-surgical swelling will dissipate and the incision lines will fade. While the incision lines are permanent, they will fade over time. Some scars may be visible, but attempts will be made to conceal the scars in the natural contours of the breast.
Be sure to follow Dr. Jimerson’s instruction following your procedure to obtain optimal results. Avoid excessive force, motion or abrasions during the healing process.
